Prior to BDL, Hannah played a key role as a senior designer at SCAPE Landscape Architecture in New York City and worked on projects such as the visioning for the Arkansas Arts Center in Little Rock, AR and the Socrates Sculpture Park master plan in NYC. She believes that the role of a designer is to create a balance between the built environment, ecological systems, and local community interests. Hannah approaches each design with a deep-rooted respect and passion for the natural world.

A native of Southern California, Hannah’s interest in landscape stems from days spent horseback riding through the hillsides of the southwestern chaparral. More recently - backpacking journeys through the Pacific Northwest and Northeast regions have inspired a deeper interest in environmental conservation. Hannah earned a Master in Urban Design from Columbia University and a Bachelor in Landscape Architecture from Cornell University, where she grew to love the landscape of the northeast, exploring the many gorges of the Finger Lakes.

Nick’s story begins at the age of 13 when he began pushing the old family mower around the village of Brockport in search of lawns to mow. His operation grew to become a key landscape company in Brockport, NY and the springboard for Bell Design & Landscape. Nick went on to earn a Bachelor and Master in Landscape Architecture degree with a minor in Urban Environmental Science and Urban Forestry from SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry in Syracuse, NY.

With 15 years of experience, Nick brings a deep knowledge of landscape design, construction and maintenance methods. He has led teams that have built work ranging from dry laid stonewalls to perennial garden beds. With a keen interest in garden and planting design, Nick has begun to focus part of his practice on contemporary perennial planting movements. He strongly believes as though landscapes should be both beautiful and ecologically functional. A great deal of Nick’s ecological education comes from his passion for backpacking and the numerous adventures he and Hannah have had in the Northeast.

Jay Gallagher

Jay is a project manager at Bell Design & Landscape.

Jay’s passion for the natural world has inspired him to pursue a career in the green industry. He had early landscaping experience with Nick, where he learned the fundamentals of landscape maintenance and project installation. He moved out West for several years, where he spent time working as a Horticulturist for the Arizona Center for Nature Conservation - allowing him to diversify his knowledge of plant species and landscape management. Upon returning to New York State, Jay had a strong interest in arboriculture and he worked with Bartlett Tree Experts in Rochester, where he learned best practices for tree care and pruning as well as valuable safety protocols. Jay rejoined Bell Design and Landscape in 2020, bringing with him the breadth of knowledge and experience he picked up during his time away. He is now an indispensable member of our team who leads a diversity of landscape management and garden installation projects.

Outside of work, Jay enjoys learning about the natural ecosystems we inhabit and applying that knowledge to his own native plant garden at home. Jay holds a degree in music performance from Finger Lakes Community College and enjoys playing his many instruments. He also enjoys hiking with his wife Stasha and their pups Wren and Nessie.

While working at BDL Nicholas has developed extensive knowledge of hardscape construction, ranging from installing sidewalks and patios to dry laid stone masonry. He is a talented stone mason and has plans to become a certified dry laid stone waller. An excellent example of his work is shown on our Silver Lake project page.
